The Dark Lords of History and Fiction

The Dark Lords of History and Fiction
Eric Bond
40' x 60'
Acrylic on canvas
2012

This painting does not celebrate the fantastical correlations between Adolph Hitler and The Dark Lord of the Empire, it attempts to display two ideas; one being that there is a symbiotic relationship between history inspiring fiction, and vice versa. Secondly, that they are too often financed by the same groups. In both of these cases Coca Cola marketed their products geared towards children.

In 1936 Coca Cola’s marketing analysts began incorporating Nazi propaganda materials in to their promotional mix, advertising on the pricey back cover of Nazi youth magazines. When Adolph Hitler declared war on America's allies, causing a trade embargo with the U.S.A., Coke changed direction; inventing a new drink to quench the thirsts of The Third Reich called FANTA.
